Kunert Farm Relies on Hose Ventilation in Its Dairy Barn
Since August 2024, the Kunert farm near Bad Aibling (Bavaria) has been using the hose ventilation system from Dr. Knopf & Oswald. The dairy farm, which has 130 cows, was looking for a solution to improve air quality in the barn and reduce heat stress in the summer. After comparing various hose systems, the farm chose the hose ventilation system, which directs fresh air from outside into the cubicles.
Initial Situation in the Barn
The dairy barn was built in 2003 and features lift windows in the older section of the barn. Only the addition built in 2018 is equipped with curtains. Especially on warm days, air would become stagnant in the barn, causing ammonia to accumulate and noticeably degrading air quality. Therefore, the farm sought a ventilation system that would supply fresh air to the entire barn—including areas where natural ventilation is limited.
Why did the company choose the Schaluch ventilation system?
Before making the investment, various systems were compared—including ceiling fans and several individual fans.
Ultimately, the deciding factor was the ability to continuously bring fresh air from outside into the barn and distribute it specifically to the lying stalls. The farm veterinarian’s recommendation also reinforced the farm’s decision.
Another advantage becomes apparent as early as spring: The system automatically responds to rising temperatures and ensures a comfortable barn environment starting on the very first warm days—often sooner than you would have turned on the ventilation yourself.
Results After 2 Years of Practical Use
After about two years of use, the Kundert farm has drawn a positive conclusion. The air quality in the barn has improved significantly, and heat stress is hardly noticeable anymore, even on hot summer days. Whereas in the past, individual cows would visibly pant, the animals are now much calmer.
Milk production also remained consistent during heat waves. At the same time, the farm has observed fewer hoof problems and consistently good fertility. According to the farm, the improved barn ventilation plays a major role in helping the animals stay healthier throughout the summer.
In addition to the benefits for animal welfare, the system’s energy efficiency is also impressive. Compared to multiple individual fans, the centralized duct ventilation system requires less electrical power while simultaneously supplying fresh air to resting areas throughout the barn in a targeted manner.
Customer Testimonial:
“I would buy the duct ventilation system again in a heartbeat. The cows remain productive even on hot days, and we notice the difference every day in the barn. We’re already considering installing the system in the young stock barn as well.”
